Perique for sale in Paulina, Louisiana

All along the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans writers have frequently told in lofty language of the many jewels in a necklace of grand plantation homes that dotted the river but which have largely disappeared.
Of those grand French Creole and Greek Revival homes few remain with the style and early building techniques that we find used in this remaining gem. An Historic Structures Survey estimates less than a dozen of these earlier antebellum houses remain in St. James Parish. It was a working plantation at its height and had its own sugar mill and cotton gin. The house was moved back from the river when the levees were built in 1928 after the Great Flood of 1927.
Now known as Perique, for a type of tobacco grown in the parish, by its current owner, the one-story raised cottage was built by Wilhelm Schexnayder and was long owned by Brignacs, Donadieus, and Poches . . . all familiar family names in this historically rich Parish.
And fortunately it survived until 2005 when the current text book preservation program was launched. Its unusual stacked hand-hewn cypress block piers and its bousillage or brick between post construction . . . was given a new lease on life . . . one that highlights its many architectural details and its unique millwork . . . yet provides modern comfort.
The current owner was mentored by preservation greats like A. Hays Town and Steele Burden. He was helped by Don Didier, Mercedes Whitecloud, and other experts . . . and it shows. The unusual floor plan with six identically sized rooms has been meticulously preserved. Colors are authentic and the patina is perfect.
You dont even mind the well-integrated baths, the Sub Zero, nor the heat and air systems.
There are two outbuildings; one used as an equipment shed, the other for storage. Of the six acres four are on the other side of the road as batture on the river.
Perique has been individually listed on the National Register of Historic Pl
